Constraining the number of compact remnants near Sgr A ∗
Due to dynamical friction stellar mass black holes and neutron stars are expected to form high density cusps in the inner parsec of our Galaxy. These compact remnants, expected to number around 20000, may be accreting cold dense gas present there, and give rise to potentially observable X-ray emission. Here we build a simple but detailed time-dependent model of such emission. We find that at le...
متن کاملParticle Acceleration in Relativistic Flows
A property common to several different astrophysical sources of high-energy gamma-rays is the presence of bulk motion at relativistic speed. The intrinsic spectra of the nonthermal radiating particles also show interesting similarities, with a pronounced hardening towards lower energies. This suggests two distinct acceleration mechanisms could be at work in these sources. At high energies, the ...

متن کاملParticle Acceleration : Basic Issues
Cosmic-rays are ubiquitous, but their origins are surprisingly difficult to understand. A review is presented of some of the basic issues common to cosmic particle accelerators and arguments leading to the likely importance of diffusive shock acceleration as a general explanation. The basic theory of diffusive shock acceleration is outlined, followed by a discussion of some of the key issues th...
متن کاملParticle acceleration mechanisms
In this paper we review the possible mechanisms for production of non-thermal electrons which are responsible for the observed non-thermal radiation in clusters of galaxies. Our primary focus is on non-thermal Bremsstrahlung and inverse Compton scattering, that produce hard X-ray emission. We first give a brief review of acceleration mechanisms and point out that in most astrophysical situation...
